Driving Personalization Through Customer Segmentation

If you’re a BigCommerce merchant, or one of our Agency or Tech Partners, and your goal is to improve a store’s personalization strategy, the new Customer Segmentation API can leverage externally defined segments that allow you to target specific customer segments with a promotion!

A customer segment is a collection of shoppers that share certain characteristics with one another. Segmenting these customers allows merchants to target specific groups of customers with intentional value propositions.

Imagine a merchant who needs to add a customer in a VIP segment as well as a retail segment, and they want to offer promotions to this customer relevant to each group. This is now possible using the Customer Segmentation API, which is being made available to beta testers.

What’s Included in the Beta?

By joining the Customer Segmentation API beta, participants will be able to:

  • Create static segments by leveraging customer segments via third-party tools, and transfer this data easily in and out of BigCommerce
  • Manually assign registered customers to a particular customer segment via the API, and share those customer segments across all channels (this feature does not yet include unregistered customers, but they will be included in a future iteration of the API)
  • Add shoppers to multiple defined customer segments (up to 100 per customer) allowing you to target a single registered customer with a variety of relevant promotions
  • Utilize segmentation within promotions, allowing you to apply a promotion that targets multiple segments of shoppers, or intentionally exclude certain segments from a promotion

For beta participants on an Enterprise plan, segments created manually via the Customer Segmentation API can also be targeted within the Promotions API, and will be visible within the Promotions Advanced Editor Control Panel UI targeting rules section, as seen below.
